Grade 8 FAST Math practice questions with answers

These three original examples come from TestByState’s Grade 8 practice generator. Read them without an account. They illustrate selected skills, not a complete test blueprint or official released questions.

Example 1

Skill reference: MA.8.GR.2.2

A dilation centered at the origin uses scale factor 3 on a figure with a 4-unit side. Describe the image.

  1. The figures are similar, and the image side is 7 units.
  2. The figures are not similar because their sizes differ.
  3. The figures are congruent, and the image side is 12 units.
  4. The figures are similar, and the image side is 12 units.
Show answer and explanation

Answer: The figures are similar, and the image side is 12 units.

4 × 3 = 12 units.

  1. A dilation preserves angle measures and multiplies all lengths by one scale factor, so it preserves similarity.
  2. 4 × 3 = 12 units.

Example 2

Skill reference: MA.8.AR.3.5

A quantity starts at 9 and increases by 3 for each 1-unit increase in x. Which equation models y?

  1. y = 3x + 9
  2. y = 3x + 10
  3. y = 4x + 10
  4. y = 4x + 9
Show answer and explanation

Answer: y = 3x + 9

Use y = mx + b to get y = 3x + 9.

  1. The initial value is 9, and the rate of change is 3.
  2. Use y = mx + b to get y = 3x + 9.

Example 3

Skill reference: MA.8.GR.1.3

Can side lengths 8, 15, and 17 form a right triangle?

  1. The side lengths form a right triangle.
  2. The side lengths do not form a right triangle.
  3. Every triangle with three different side lengths is right.
  4. The side lengths form a right triangle because 8 + 15 = 17.
Show answer and explanation

Answer: The side lengths form a right triangle.

64 + 225 = 289, so the triangle is right.

  1. Compare 8² + 15² with 17².
  2. 64 + 225 = 289, so the triangle is right.
