New York State Math Test Guide for Grades 3–8
New York’s annual Grades 3–8 Mathematics Tests measure the state’s Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards. The spring test is a fixed, two-session assessment rather than a through-year or adaptive test.
Who takes NY State Math Test?
Students in New York public schools take the mathematics test in Grades 3 through 8. Regents mathematics examinations are a separate high-school program and are not covered by this guide.
2026-2027 schedule
For 2026–27, schools choose two consecutive testing days between April 5 and May 14, 2027. The same grade tests on the same two locally selected days.
Structure and current practice status
Session 1 contains multiple-choice questions. Session 2 combines multiple-choice questions with short and constructed responses worth one, two, or three credits. Published visible totals include embedded field-test questions, so they should not be treated as a fixed scored-item total.
TestByState has completed the standards and blueprint research, but New York practice is not yet available. Constructed-response scoring, several interaction and visual families, a 2027 educator-guide recheck, and full-form validation remain required.

Is the New York State Math Test adaptive?
No. The current Grades 3–8 mathematics test uses two fixed sessions.
Do all students use a calculator?
No. Calculator access changes by grade and, in Grade 6, by session. See the grade guide for the exact rule.
