Indiana ILEARN Math Guide for Grades 3–8
Indiana ILEARN Mathematics is a through-year system for Grades 3–8. Three Checkpoints provide standards-based progress information during the year, followed by a spring Summative assessment.
Who takes ILEARN Math?
Indiana students in Grades 3 through 8 take ILEARN Mathematics. The Grade 11 Indiana SAT and the I AM alternate assessment are different programs and are outside this guide.
2026-2027 schedule
Checkpoint 1 runs September 14–November 13, 2026; Checkpoint 2 runs November 16, 2026–February 5, 2027; Checkpoint 3 runs February 8–April 9, 2027; and the Summative window is April 12–May 7, 2027.
Structure and current practice status
Each online Checkpoint is adaptive and generally contains 20–25 questions. The adaptive Summative follows the three Checkpoints and includes automatically scored interactions plus embedded open-ended, hand-scored mathematics work.
TestByState practice is not yet available for ILEARN. Indiana has announced an assessment-framework update after adoption of new 2026 mathematics standards, and remaining open-response, graphing, measuring, visual, and content-family work must be completed against that framework.

How ILEARN Math Checkpoints work — Indiana’s three required Checkpoints are short, adaptive progress measures tied to what students have had an opportunity to learn. They are not three copies of the spring Summative.

Are ILEARN Checkpoints pass/fail tests?
Checkpoint data is used for progress monitoring and instruction. The spring Summative provides the annual proficiency determination.
How many questions are on a Checkpoint?
Official family guidance describes Checkpoints as approximately 20–25 questions. Adaptive delivery means a fixed practice form is only an approximation.
Can students use calculators?
Grades 3–5 do not use calculators. Grades 6–8 have calculator access only on eligible items or segments, with the calculator type changing by grade.
